To Lead and to Care: Towards a Care Economy that is Fair to Women and to Mother Earth

Share

Held in the framework of the XVI Regional Conference on Women in Latin America and the Caribbean, this High-Level Side Event organized by GWL Voices, with the co-sponsorship of the Fund for the Development of Latin America and the Caribbean (FILAC), will address one of the region's most urgent challenges: advancing toward a care economy that is just, inclusive, and ecologically sustainable.

The conversation will explore how to value, redistribute, and professionalize care work—most of which is still carried out by women, especially those facing intersecting inequalities. The event will emphasize the leadership and ancestral knowledge of Indigenous, Afro-descendant, and rural women in shaping a new development paradigm where care for people and the planet is placed at the center. Featuring prominent voices from across the region, this dialogue seeks to inspire regulatory and policy frameworks that advance gender equality, social justice, and environmental sustainability.

This event will have a panel composed by:

  • María Fernanda Espinosa, GWL Voices Executive Director, and 73rd President of the UN General Assembly (2018-2019)
  • Epsy Campbell, GWL Voices member, former Vice-President of Costa Rica, and President of the Afropolitical Women’s Front
  • Grace Nogales Haro, Representative of the Latin American Network of Rural Women (REDLAC)
  • Dali Angel, FILAC Coordinator of Planning and Implementation of Programs, Projects, Indigenous Youth, and Women
  • Otilia Lux de Cotí, Advisor to the Flagship Indigenous Woman Program (MILAC); Former Vice President of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues; Former Permanent Representative of Guatemala to the UNESCO Executive Board.
  • Gabriela Rosero, Head of UN Women Office in Chile.

The event will be held on room: José María Morelos y Pavón, section 1.

Please note that you must be registered to the Conference to have access to this event.
