GWL Voices is following with concern the threat posed by intents to repeal laws banning female genital mutilation in some countries which, if implemented, represent a setback in the global fight against gender-based violence. As GWL Voices, we call on governments for honoring international commitments and respect national legislation to protect women and girls worldwide.
The practice of FGM is recognized internationally as a violation of the human rights of women and girls. FGM violates a person’s rights to health, security and physical integrity; the right to be free from torture and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment; and the right to life, in cases when the procedure results in death.
This practice reflects deep-rooted inequality between the sexes and constitutes an extreme form of discrimination against girls and women. Tradition should serve as a source of cultural enrichment, wellbeing, knowledge and innovation, never to exercise subjugation.
GWL Voices will continue to advocate for the rights and dignity of women and girls in every corner of the planet.
According to GWL Voices study Female Political Leadership and Legislation Against Gender-Based Violence: What is the Link? the higher the presence of women in parliaments, or the more equal those parliaments are, the more the existence of legislation against GBV. The presence of women leaders in different political arenas improves and promotes policies against GBV.
The members of GWL Voices defend a world where every girl is free from Female Genital Mutilation, and call on stakeholders to take the necessary measures to prevent this setback from happening.
Actions
The proposal is to carry out actions on social media on the 25th of each month, coinciding with November 25th, International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, specifically addressing Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) as well.
