GWL Voices Celebrates Slovenia, Mexico, and Spain’s Leadership in Championing Women’s Representation at the UN

Share
GWL Voices proudly supports the joint statement delivered by Ambassador Samuel Žbogar, representing Slovenia, Mexico, and Spain, along with 78 other Member States, during the 79th Session of the UN General Assembly on women’s representation at the UN. This pivotal statement highlights the urgent need for greater representation of women in United Nations leadership roles, aligning seamlessly with GWL Voices’ campaigns, #MadamSecretaryGeneral, and #Rotation4Equality.
We commend Slovenia’s remarkable leadership in spearheading this initiative and its unwavering commitment to advancing gender equality on the global stage along with Mexico and Spain. These countries have been long-standing partners of GWL Voices, and have consistently demonstrated their dedication to multilateralism and inclusive leadership. This statement is yet another testament to its proactive approach to ensuring the United Nations leads by example in achieving gender parity.
These countries’ steadfast advocacy is particularly inspiring as it calls attention to the glaring disparities in UN leadership. Despite women comprising half the global population, the UN has yet to elect a female Secretary-General, and only four women have served as Presidents of the General Assembly in 79 years. This imbalance underscores the importance of this call to action, urging Member States to nominate and support female candidates for these critical roles.
At GWL Voices, we deeply value Mexico, Slovenia, and Spain’s partnership and leadership, which has been instrumental in amplifying the voices of women leaders and driving forward meaningful initiatives like this one. By championing gender equality and supporting systemic changes within the UN, these countries continue to set an example for other nations to follow.
As the global community approaches significant milestones, including the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and the 25th anniversary of Security Council Resolution 1325, this leadership serves as a beacon of hope and progress. Together, we can ensure that the next Secretary-General and other UN leaders reflect the diversity and strength of the global population.
GWL Voices is honored to stand with Mexico, Slovenia, Spain, and the 78 Member States backing this transformative statement. We look forward to continuing our collaboration to achieve a more inclusive, equitable, and representative United Nations.
