GWL Voices has signed a partnership with United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG), the world's largest organization of cities, local, regional, and metropolitan governments and their associations, to strengthen women's participation in local politics.
The signed agreement aims to promote the integration of a gender perspective in governance and local public policies, strengthen women's participation in local political life, and enhance the representation of leaders within the Feminist Municipal Movement at the global level.
GWL Voices and UCLG have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to promote the full exercise of women's political rights and advance the gender equality agenda.
This partnership will also foster cooperation in the co-creation of knowledge on women's political participation at the local level, the development of innovative services for elected women in local governments, and the establishment of strategic alliances to ensure the representation of the Feminist Municipal Movement in global forums, processes, and networks.
GWL Voices President, Susana Malcorra, emphasized:
What is particularly interesting about the 'Women in Politics' initiative is that it connects women's representation in global politics with local politics, and vice versa. Measuring and reinforcing the effectiveness of global decisions and how they translate into local realities is essential.
During the signing meeting, UCLG Secretary General Emilia Saiz highlighted:
Equality can only be achieved with the commitment of local politics and action that restores trust in institutions and democracy. The Feminist Municipal Movement drives women's leadership in decision-making, and it grows through partnerships. The agreement with GWL Voices is key to ensuring that local voices reach the global stage.
GWL Voices is pleased to establish this framework of cooperation to strengthen its "Women in Politics" initiative. With UCLG's support, this initiative will focus on generating and disseminating knowledge on women's political participation in local governments and “enhancing the capacities of women local leaders” to advance women's rights and gender equality at the local level.
