Share
On January 17, 2026, UNA-UK will convene a landmark public event at Methodist Central Hall Westminster to mark the 80th anniversary of the first United Nations General Assembly, held in the very same room on 10 January 1946. Bringing together senior UN leaders, UK officials, civil society, youth, and global experts, the event will reflect on eight decades of multilateralism while looking firmly to the future of the UN at a moment of profound global change. Ms. María Fernanda Espinosa, Executive Director of GWL Voices and Chair of the Council of Former Presidents of the General Assembly, will deliver the Closing Call to Action, alongside the UN Secretary-General António Guterres’ keynote address and high-level panels on peace, planetary challenges, and UN reform—highlighting the central role of inclusive, women’s leadership in renewing the legitimacy, effectiveness, and future direction of the United Nations as the next Secretary-General selection process begins.
