Power, Representation, and the Future of the UN

Share
At a moment of profound strain on multilateralism—marked by declining trust, geopolitical polarization, and widening gaps between global decision-making and lived realities—the event asks a simple but urgent question: who decides? Despite decades of commitments, women remain structurally underrepresented in senior leadership across the international system, with real consequences for legitimacy, effectiveness, and impact.
Drawing on evidence from the Women in Multilateralism 2026 report, the discussion will make the case that women’s leadership is not symbolic, but a structural prerequisite for effective multilateralism. With senior representatives from Mexico, Spain, Slovenia, and global leaders including:
- Alicia Buenrostro - Deputy Permanent Representative of Mexico
- Ana Jimenez - Deputy Permanent Representative of Spain
- Susana Malcorra - President and Founder of GWL Voices
- Melanne Verveer - GWL Voices member
- Representative of Slovenia (head of delegation)
The event will explore concrete pathways to move from rhetoric to reform—at a pivotal moment ahead of the next UN Secretary-General selection. Can the UN finally align its reform agenda with action, and is it ready for a Madam Secretary-General?
