Women in Politics: Obstacles and Challenges to Gender Parity in Subnational Government

GWL Voices in collaboration with UN Women LAC, UCLG, Chile's Permanent Mission to the UN, Colombia's Permanent Mission to the UN, and the Colmena Fund will highlight strategies for increasing women's meaningful participation in local decision-making, emphasizing the importance of gender-sensitive leadership to tackle pressing local and global challenges.

Despite decades of advocacy, only 35.5% of local government representatives are women, and just 5% hold executive leadership positions such as mayors. This session will shed light into female leadership at the subnational level, focusing on Latin America, and discuss the persistent barriers women face when entering and remaining in politics.
